The Great Comet of 1812 was created by Dave Malloy and is directed by Rachel Chavkin. It is based on an excerpt from War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy and tells the story of two young lovers and their experiences in Moscow. The musical began previews on October 18. The official opening is scheduled for November 14.
Principal Cast Members
The musical stars Josh Groban as Pierre and Denée Benton as Natasha. Both of them are making their Broadway debuts, as are dozens of other members of the cast and creative team.
Groban is an American actor, singer, songwriter, and record producer. His first four solo albums were certified multi-platinum. He has sold over 25 million albums around the world and has been nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Benton played the role of Natasha at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts this winter and was selected to play the role opposite Groban on Broadway. Her previous work includes a starring role as Nabulungi in The Book of Mormon in the West End and on tour across the United States.
The Great Comet of 1812 is choreographed by Sam Pinkleton. The sets are designed by Mimi Lien, and the costumes are designed by Tony Award winner Paloma Young. The musical includes lighting design by Bradley King and sound design by Nicholas Pope. The music is supervised by Sonny Paladino and directed by Or Matias. Casting was done by Stewart/Whitley, and production stage management was performed by Karyn Meek. The Broadway production of The Great Comet of 1812 is produced by Howard and Janet Kagan and Paula Marie Black.
History of The Great Comet of 1812
The musical was commissioned and developed at Ars Nova. It made its world premiere there in 2012 and then transferred to the custom-built pop-up theater Kazino in the Meatpacking District the following year. The musical was successful and transferred again to the theater district and continued its run until early 2014. It recently played a limited engagement at the American Repertory Theater.
