The Sons of The American Legion Virginia Squadron 34 and the Old Dominion Boat Club will host the 4th Annual Event to Benefit the EOD Warrior Foundation on Sunday, November 6, 2016 from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Old Dominion Boat Club at 1 King Street in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.
EOD is the abbreviation of Explosive Ordnance Disposal, perhaps the most dangerous specialty in the very dangerous business of warfare. As featured in the film The Hurt Locker, military EOD technicians frequently lose limbs – and their lives – in the brave execution of their duty.
Through the generosity of hundreds of donors large and small, over the past three years the event has raised over $200,000 in support of the foundation’s mission to provide financial assistance and support to active-duty and veteran wounded, injured or ill EOD warriors, families of our wounded and fallen EOD warriors and the maintenance of the EOD Memorial at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
“The EOD Warrior Foundation Board of Directors and staff are humbled by the hard work and generosity of the Sons of the American Legion and the Old Dominion Boat Club, who put on this wonderful community event,” said Foundation Executive Director Nicole Motsek. “Their annual gathering is a great opportunity to raise awareness about the critical and lifesaving work that EOD warriors do, while bringing the civilian and military communities together – all while raising funds to support these brave warriors. We are truly grateful for the continued support of these two organizations to make this event a success.”
One of the highlights of the annual event is the large Silent Auction which brings in thousands of dollars in bids on antiques, artwork, vacation travel, unique firearms and more.
Freshly prepared food will be donated by such Old Town Alexandria landmarks as The Fish Market, Alexandria Cupcake and Bittersweet Catering. Beer, wine and soft drinks are also provided. Live music will be provided by the Wicker Lee Band and the Alexandria Harmonizers.
“We are honored to have the Boat Club be the home of this important event every year,” stated Richard Banchoff, President of the Old Dominion Boat Club. “Bringing the whole community together under our roof every autumn is now an Alexandria tradition that we are very proud to be a part of.”
The family-friendly annual event offers fun food, music and activities for children of all ages while supporting the great work being done by the EOD Warrior Foundation.
“Long after the war has ended, these brave warriors’ financial and medical needs go on,” stated Nathan J. Lindsay, USAF, Col (Ret), Commander of the Sons of The American Legion, Virginia Squadron 34. “Every generous contribution to the foundation – and the community’s participation in the annual celebration – does wonders to demonstrate how grateful we all are for the safety and security these soldiers’ sacrifice has given us.”
