Heafner shared the stage with world-renowned figures Astronaut Buzz Aldrin and Lt. Gen Russel Honore’. The event was part of the Faculty Leadership Speakers Academy, an event that brings cutting edge leadership innovation to entrepreneurs and other thought leaders.
Heafner is a best-selling author and serial entrepreneur who made the business journal’s Fast 50 honoring the 50 fastest growing companies in Central North and South Carolina and INC magazine’s Fast 500, honoring the 500 fastest growing firms in the United States. Heafner is a fiduciary financial expert and tax advisor who is a sought after for feature stories appearing on ABC, NBC, CBS Fox, the Wall Street Journal, Fortune Magazine, and US News & World Report. Heafner has made it his life’s work to teach America how the Wall Street system fails individuals, and what one can you do about it.
Heafner is on a mission to simplify retirement options while strategically paying the least amount of taxes allowed by law. He spoke passionately about the need to work with a fiduciary expert to gain the freedom to no longer worry about the rise in income taxes. He exclaimed, “When I’m retired, lying on the beaches of Costa Rica drinking Mai Tai’s, I don’t see myself writing big checks to the IRS. But you know what? That’s the path that most Americans are on.”
The program was filled with Imagineering that included opportunity and security forecasting. Lt. General Honore’ cautioned “The next wars will be about water, not oil. From global and domestic terrorist threats to natural disasters, we encounter new risks to our individual, community, and economic security each day. We will need to leverage technology to deal with 7 to 10 Million people. It’s not an option, we must do it. Imagine a plane landing at LaGuardia and the computer tells the pilot that the passenger in seat 22 has a fever. None of this is invented, and we have to live up to our ability to be innovators and dreamers.”
The other keynote speaker was Col. and Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, an American engineer and a former astronaut who is working on his next mission. As the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 11, he was one of the first two humans to land on the Moon, and the second person to walk on it spoke about going big on his mission to Mars. He commented, “In my opinion, there is no more convincing way to demonstrate American leadership for the remainder of this century than to commit to a permanent presence on Mars, going to Mars without setting up a colony — launching only round-trip manned missions is not enough, nor would establishing human outposts on the moon.”
Heafner embodies both opportunity and strategic planning to live a life of ease upon retirement. It was his first-hand personal experience of owning and running several successful businesses and being taken for millions by unethical Wall Street companies that motivated him to help other entrepreneurs avoid the same fate. Years ago, Heafner began a business, Carolina Fitness Equipment, selling high-quality fitness equipment to consumers and commercial users. He started with one store, living in the back, and grew it to the nation’s largest specialty fitness retail chain in the country.
Heafner’s mission is summarized by the way he lives life as he commented, “I want to set an example for others to lead an independent, abundant, satisfying retirement. My logo is the “lion in winter.” I want my clients to lead the life of “A Lion in Winter” throughout their retirement.
