Russian Federation, December 2016.- Nornickel, formerly known as Norilsk Nickel, the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium, celebrate 2016 as the year of major environmental milestones including the shutdown of the nickel plant two months ahead of schedule cutting emissions by 30%, the sign of a USD 1,7 billion contract on sulfur dioxide capture project with SNC-Lavalin, Canada, its biding to the UN Global Compact initiative in CSR and Sustainable development, among other activities. Also, it is important to stress that since 2004 and by 2020 the company will invest USD 4,7 billion in environmental projects.
Nickel plant in the city of Norilsk was fully shutdown two months ahead of schedule
On August 17, production the nickel-refining workshop was idled, followed by cobalt chlorine-leaching workshop – on August 24, while both workshops were expected to shut down on October.
The shutdown of Nickel Plant is one of the key milestones of a large-scale downstream reconfiguration program, which had put a strong emphasis on improving the Company’s environmental footprint. The achievement of this milestone combined with the upgrade and expansion of capacity of Talnakh concentrator should result in a significant improvement of the environmental situation in Norilsk industrial area already this year. The Company is expecting that from next year onwards sulfur dioxide emissions will be reduced by a total of 15 % in the Polar Division, and by 30 % – within the city boundaries of Norilsk.
USD 4,74 billion investment in environmental projects
In accordance with the new development strategy, Nornickel is leading a large-scale production upgrades initiative, which, among other goals, will eliminate the legacy environmental issues. Expended capital will reach RUB 800 billion by 2020, with RUB 300 billion (USD 4,74 billion) earmarked for environmental projects.

The project is for Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant located at the Company’s Polar Division. Sulphur Project is a major environmental initiative forming an inherent part of the Company’s downstream modernization program. The project targets a drastic reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions through implementation of the most efficient technical solutions.
The contract is divided into two phases: developing a detailed project design documentation (first phase) and execution of the project (second phase). Decision on the second phase will be taken by the Company upon completion of the first phase.
Nornickel joined UN Global Compact initiative in CSR and sustainable development
The company has joined the United Nations Global Compact. This major UN initiative in corporate social responsibility and sustainable development unites entities committed to responsible business and good industry practice worldwide.
The mission of the Global Compact is to promote recognition and practical application by businesses worldwide of ten basic principles on human rights, labour, environment and anticorruption.
Following these principles globally will provide for sustainable development going forward. Currently, the Global Compact brings together over 13,000 corporate participants and other stakeholders from more than 160 countries, with global industry leaders among them. By joining the initiative, the Global Compact participants gain access to the UN’s knowledge and experience in corporate social responsibility and sustainable development, as well as to its expertise of the private sector.
