“Random Notes” is a collection of memories and anecdotes from the life of singer and musician Gilah Yaron. The musical environment in which she grew up is described throughout these pages and enables a glimpse into the events and circumstances that she experienced. Those shaped her life as a student, a professional singer and a voice instructor.
Born in Tel Aviv, Gilah Yaron is the daughter of German immigrants. She studied with Hede Tuerk-Boernstein and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.
Gilah Yaron is well known to music lovers in Israel and Europe, through her many performances with orchestras, choirs, chamber ensembles, recitals and recordings. Her repertoire ranges from the period of the baroque through to contemporary music. Gilah Yaron appeared with conductors such as Paul Paray, Igor Markevitch, Gary Bertini, Mendy Rodan, Zubin Mehta, Lázló Heltay and many others.
Her development as a singer is closely connected to the renowned Rinat choir, established by Gary Bertini, its conductor from 1955 until 1974. Gilah appeared with Rinat in many concerts and tours, often as a soloist.
Since 1982 Gilah Yaron has been on the staff of The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. In addition to being a voice teacher, Ms. Yaron frequently gives courses in Lieder and Oratorio performance. She also teaches German grammar, comprehension and diction to the students of the vocal department. Book she has written are used for this course and are based on the poetic texts of songs.
Recently Ms. Yaron completed her book “Diction for Singers” – a guide to pronunciation in six languages. It is used by teachers, singers and choir directors. She teaches voice and diction at the Israeli School of Choral.
