What started off as a small copywriting gig on the Fiverr marketplace has now expanded into a thriving online business with its own website and a team of three copywriters. Fiverr is a site where freelancers offer their services for $5 and up. Just over two years ago, Val Hudson set up her copywriting services on Fiverr, and in keeping with its name charged $5 for 500 words of copywriting.
“It was hard work for little pay,” recalls Val. “Especially when you consider that Fiverr takes a 20% cut, which left me with only $4!”
But Val’s gig quickly gained popularity, and she was gradually able to increase her prices. Price increases didn’t seem to affect demand, however, and Val found herself working long days and weekends. At that point a former work colleague, Julia, agreed to help out in order to lessen the load.
“We were still turning new customers away,” says Val. “Julia and I are both good writers, and we both became professionally certified with a Diploma in Copywriting. I think that’s why we get so much repeat business – because we’re good at what we do and always over deliver. We actually have almost 1,200 5-star reviews, so we’re proud of that!”
Val and Julia have since set up a business of their own outside of Fiverr at http://thebusinesscopywriters.com, and have been joined by Theresa, also a qualified copywriter. They are based in Ontario, Canada, and offer a range of copywriting services for businesses the world over.
What the team enjoys most about the work is the variety. Their customers come mainly from the U.S., the U.K. and Australia, but they’ve also written for businesses located in Asia and Africa, too. Their goal is to continue to expand the business by offering professional copywriting services at reasonable rates.
