Charlotte Humans for Positive Progress, a local activist group, will be holding an interfaith community potluck and mosque tour on Friday, April 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Islamic Society of Greater Charlotte (ISGC) Mosque. Community members are encouraged to attend and learn more about interfaith relations and diversity in the Charlotte community while sharing in delicious food and peaceful conversation. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to take a one-hour tour the Mosque.
The event is being organized by Victoria Lehmann on behalf of Charlotte Humans for Positive Progress. Speakers at the event will include Lehmann as well as Imam Atif from the ISGC, Congresswoman Alma Adam’s Liaison Julia Lopez, and Abrar Al-Shaer from the UNC Charlotte Muslim Students Association. Speeches will begin at 6 p.m. followed by a tour of the mosque. Attendees are welcome to participate in the Asr prayer at 6:30 p.m. or the Maghrib prayer at 7:30 p.m.
This event is a chance for people from all religions and backgrounds to come together and learn more about one another in a relaxed environment. Understanding and accepting one another’s differences is a step toward becoming stronger as one united whole.
Lehmann states, “We want to embody the ideal of building bridges, not walls. To make a conscious effort to further educate ourselves and our community and bring people together at the same time. The outpouring of support has been truly moving, and I am excited to share this experience with everyone on April 7! Furthermore, I am reminded of a quote by Marian Wright Edelman that relates directly to this event: ‘Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.’”
Members of the public are welcome to attend. Dinner will be catered by the Muslim community and the ISGC Mosque, but attendees are invited to bring a dessert or vegetarian dish to share with the group if they wish. The event will be held at the ISGC Mosque, 7025 The Plaza, Charlotte, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
