These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities. All honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.
With more than a decade of professional experience as a Process Safety Consultant, Rene’ has certainly proved herself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field. As a talented, dynamic, results-driven leader, she has demonstrated success not only with RISK, but with every company she has ever worked for. She has provided visionary leadership in the highly competitive Gas, Oil, Chemical and Petrochemical consulting industries.
Rene’ Murata first began her career as an Assistant Engineer for an electrical firm in their Research and Development Department, where one of her tasks involved developing internal policies and procedures. Several years later, she relocated to California with her husband and took a position as an Administrative Assistant working in a refinery before being promoted to Engineering Assistant turned Assistant Engineer. It was during that time that she became educated on Process Safety Management (PSM) that was required of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). As a Process Safety Consultant in the gas, oil, chemical, and petrochemical industries, Rene’ started her own company, serving as Owner and Chief Executive Officer of Risk Integrity Safety Knowledge, Inc. (RISK, Inc.) and opened two offices in Spring, Texas and Sao Paulo Brazil. With her language skills in Portuguese and Spanish, she has been able to help expand awareness of process safety management in countries outside the United States. Comprised of engineers, process safety specialists, and several other highly trained professionals in the field, RISK, Inc. offers a full range of technical consulting, training, and staffing services for OSHA’s PSM and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Risk Management Program (EPA’s RMP).
Rene’s key responsibilities include, hazard and risk assessment consultation, providing technical expertise in process safety and risk management. She has developed and provided training and safety guidance to onshore facilities in Brazil, China, and throughout the United States. This work includes process safety, process hazard analyses, development of Management of Change (MOC) and Inherently Safer Systems (ISS/IST) programs, and strategic implementation plans for safety and environmental compliance. She has experience leading PHA studies using the hazard and operability (HAZOP) and What-If/Checklist analysis techniques.
Rene’ has been recognized worldwide for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the field. In 2015 she was selected as Outstanding Professional of the Year with Oxford Who’s Who. In 2016 featured in Women of Distinction Magazine and for 2017 selected as Top Executive of the Year in Risk Management by the International Association of Top Professionals. Rene’ is also an active member of Center for Chemical Process Safety and American Institute of Chemical Engineers and she participates annually in several events to support her industry and community. Rene’ is also working on an online course to coach women, specifically healers, teachers, and entrepreneurs, in the successful development of their own business through another of her business ventures, CEO Essence. Additionally, she has recently partnered with Salvatore Laureano to develop a line of fashionable business attire for women using environmental and animal friendly materials.
Rene’ holds a BA in Applied Physics and a BS in Applied Mathematics from Southern Oregon University, as well as a Master of Business in Global Enterprise Management from Jones International University. She is certified in LOPA, SIS and SIL identification and calculations.
Looking back Rene’ attributes her success to her mentors she has had along the way; her husband who taught her patience with herself and gave her encouragement to pursue her dreams, her father who was a teacher, antagonist, protagonist and friend, pushing her to continuously learn, and her mother who taught her humility and grace. The industries in which Rene’ works have the potential to have serious, life threatening incidents. It is because of Rene’s strong belief that everyone can and should go home to their loved ones and her work on improving companies’ safety programs and educating professionals that she positively influences and changes lives.
