LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – In the late summer of 2016, Mr. Nicholas “Nick” Salles, from Oceanport, NJ, founded Purewave Jiu-Jitsu, the unique martial arts school which places emphasis on community involvement, through incorporating community service in its curriculum, as a means to promote the ideal of camaraderie as a hallmark of a true martial artist. Purewave Jiu-Jitsu abides by the principles of the intricate martial art, all while highlighting the aspects of self-improvement and self-discovery through one’s dedication to learning the indispensable skill of self-defense.
The story of how the school came to be is just as fascinating as its founder’s life journey. In addition to establishing Purewave Jiu-Jitsu at just 21, Mr. Salles is also a part-time Biology major at Monmouth University, as well as a rising star in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu scene, having won, via arm bar, at his pro debut at Fight to Win 30, on April 8th of this year.
Embodying the saying “lead by example”, Mr. Salles commented on his influence on Purewave Jiu-Jitsu student athletes, saying “There’s no better feeling in the world than being able to inspire others to chase their dreams and to reach their full potential as individuals. We don’t have to fit a mold or conform to societal standards…we just need to make progress and be the best versions of ourselves that we can possibly be…that’s what true success means to me.”
A diverse, family-friendly, and safe community, Purewave Jiu-Jitsu is comprised of people of all ages and walks of life, who are dedicated to becoming the best version of themselves. Speaking of the atmosphere within the school, Mr. Salles said “Purewave Jiu-Jitsu is a vehicle, an outlet, for positive energy. Where else can you get a good workout in, learn how to defend yourself, and help surrounding communities? Well, such a place exists!”
Since the school’s founding, Purewave Jiu-Jitsu members, along with Mr. Salles, have participated in various community actions, including, but not limited to, beach sweeps, coat drives, meal preparations at the Ronald McDonald House, Toys for Tots drives, and more. Concluding his statements, Mr. Salles said”It almost sounds too good to be true, but none of this would be possible without hard work. Our members sweat and put in work on the mats during the week days and then volunteer their free-time on the weekends…that’s true dedication.”
