SKOKIE, IL – 3 May, 2017 – Dr. Rakhee M. Bowker is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Pediatrics in the Section of Neonatology for Rush Medical College. She was selected as Top Neonatologist of the Year for 2017 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities. All honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.
With over 10 years of professional experience in the healthcare industry, Dr. Bowker has certainly proven herself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field. As a dynamic, results-driven leader, she has demonstrated success honing her expertise in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Her key responsibilities at Rush Medical College include educating medical students studying pediatrics regarding the subspecialty of the care of critically ill newborn and premature infants. Within the Rush University Children’s Hospital, she is responsible for care of critically ill newborns admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. As a Neonatologist at Rush University’s Maternal Fetal Neonatal Center, Dr. Bowker also participates in multidisciplinary care for pregnant women with congenital anomalies of the fetus requiring specialized care during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. The Vice President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami, stated “Choosing Dr. Bowker for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make. Dr. Bowker knew from an early age that she wanted to be a physician. After graduating as Valedictorian of her class at Newington High School in 2000, Dr. Bowker studied Biomedical Ethics at Brown University. She went on receive her Doctorate of Medicine in 2009 from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. In 2012 Dr. Bowker completed her Pediatric Residency training at Columbia University Medical Center’s Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian. In 2016 she completed her Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. Dr. Bowker is a Board Certified Pediatrician and licensed to practice in the state of Illinois.
Dr. Bowker remains active in her community and has been recognized worldwide for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. In 2004 she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brown University where she was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. In 2008 she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society while attending Columbia University. In 2009 she was a recipient for the Glasgow-Rubin Achievement Award from the American Medical Women’s Association, which is awarded to women graduating in the top 10 percent of their medical school class. In 2014 she was inducted into the International Women’s Leadership Association. While at Northwestern, Dr. Bowker’s scholarly research in the pathophysiology of neonatal intestinal injury received numerous awards. In 2014 she was awarded the First Year Fellow Basic and Translational Research Prize from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine for “Role of H1F-1a on intestinal VEGF production, intestinal endothelial cell proliferation and tissue injury protection in an experimental mouse model of necrotizing enterocolitis.” In 2016 she was the recipient of the Third Year Fellow Basic and Translational Research Prize from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine for “Hypoxia inducible factor 1-alpha stabilization increases endothelial cell proliferation in the intestinal villi in a mouse model of necrotizing enterocolitis.” Most recently she was awarded the Frederic M. Kenney Award for Outstanding Abstract Presentation at the Midwest Society for Pediatric Research Annual Meeting in 2016 for “Prolyl hydroxylase domain enzyme inhibition preserves the intestinal microvasculature via vascular endothelial growth factor signaling in neonatal mice.” She has been the recipient of multiple Travel Awards from the Pediatric Academic Societies to present her scholarly work. In 2017 she was selected as “Top Neonatologist of the Year” by the International Association of Top Professionals.
Looking back, Dr. Bowker attributes her success to her training, perseverance, and outstanding mentors she has had along the way. She is driven by her passion and commitment to improving the lives of newborns and their families. In the future, she will continue to grow as a physician and educator, providing outstanding training to future pediatricians, and striving to make a difference in the lives of these most fragile newborns.
