Gives Away Birth Control in Anti-Contraception Activist, Teresa Manning’s Name

WASHINGTON, DC – 3 May, 2017 – Nurx, makers of a birth control app, are offering new users up to two months of free birth control with the promo code ‘TeresaManning’ today through May 31, 2017. The telemedicine start-up and mobile health platform makes birth control and PrEP (HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis) more accessible to everyone through an app.

New users will receive a $30 credit, which equates to up to two months of free birth control with the promo code. After choosing their birth control type and brand, users answer a few questions and enter their shipping and insurance information for a licensed physician to review. Once the review is complete, the doctor will issue and fill the prescription, which will be delivered to their home at no additional cost. The promo code ‘TeresaManning’ can be entered during checkout through May 31, 2017.

This week, Donald Trump appointed anti-contraception activist, Teresa Manning, to be the deputy assistant secretary for population affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services. Manning’s appointment would give her control over Title X, a program which provides contraceptive services to millions of low-income and uninsured Americans. Such a move would greatly increase the barriers women face in accessing affordable reproductive healthcare and further support the Trump administration’s treatment of women as second-class citizens.

“At Nurx, we are focused on reducing these barriers women face, and making birth control as accessible as possible, and our promotion is a reflection of that. Nurx will continue to serve as a low-cost option for women during these uncertain times,” said co-founder and CEO of Nurx, Hans Gangeskar.

Manning previously worked for the staunchly pro-life organization, Family Research Council, which promotes abstinence until marriage and has lobbied against the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate. Manning has claimed that making the morning after pill more accessible to people is “medically irresponsible,” “anti-family,” and that it promotes “promiscuity.”

In a 2003 interview, Manning also stated that “contraception doesn’t work.” However, science proves otherwise. If used correctly, the Pill, NuvaRing, and the Patch are more than 99% effective at preventing a pregnancy. Teen birth rates in the United States are currently at an all-time low, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently credited increased access to low-cost reproductive health services, such as birth control, as a contributing factor to the overall decline.

Despite the important services that Title X provides, many women across the United States still don’t have reliable, consistent access to contraception. “Nurx bridges the gap many face by providing discreet, low-cost, effective contraception care for those who need it, regardless of where they live or how much money they make,” said Dr. Jessica Knox, the medical director at Nurx.

“Research shows that the easier and more affordable birth control is, the more women will use it,” said Dr. Edvard Engesaeth, co-founder of Nurx. “Individuals should not have to jump through unnecessary hoops in order to access care. With Nurx, we are changing the way birth control is issued and accessed and allowing women to get the care they need on their own terms.”
