IndexBox has just published a new report “World: Malt – Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025“.
According to market research, the global malt market was estimated at approx. 22 million tonnes in 2015; over 90% of this is produced from barley. Most of the malt produced is used in beer production; distillation and food production account for an insignificant volume of output. The increasing consumption of beer in the developing-market countries and the widespread consumption of craft beer in developed countries will result in increased malt consumption; malt constitutes one of the main component ingredients for the production of beer.
Driven by population growth, urbanization and the increase in disposable incomes in developing countries, in turn leading to the increased consumption of beer, the malt sector as a whole is projected to continue an upward consumption trend over the next nine years.
Market performance is forecast to accelerate, with an anticipated CAGR of +3.7% for the nine-year period from 2015 to 2025, which is expected to lead the market value to 30.5 million tonnes by the end of 2025.
Beer constitutes one of the most widely consumed alcoholic drinks world-wide. Global beer production has recorded a positive growth trend over the past decade. Total global beer production equated to 189 million kiloliters в 2015, an increase of 1.1% against the previous year.
China remains the world’s largest producer of beer (for the 14th successive year), despite a 4.3% decrease against the 2014 recorded figure. In 2015, China’s share in total global production amounted to 23%. China was followed bu the USA (12%), Brazil (7%) and Germany (5%). China slightly reduced its volume of beer output over the last year; Brazil, however registered significant growth and in the USA and Germany, the output volume remained relatively stable against the previous year.
Overall, Asia accounts for approx. one third of global beer production. Over the last year, beer output in the region was down by 1.3% against the 2014 figure; despite this, however, the region remains the largest in the world in terms of volume of production.
Europe accounts for approx. 27% of total output; Latin America accounts for 17% and North America, for 13%. Over the past five year period, however, the share of North America and Europe contracted slightly, while Asia and Latin America increased their share in terms of total production volume. This is mainly due to increased output in China and Brazil.
Asian countries are not only key beer producers: they also constitute an important consumer market. Increasing household incomes and changing lifestyles in these developing-market countries are contributing factors in driving the expansion of the beer market. Beer producers, therefore, are currently expanding their sales channels in the emerging-market countries. Transnational beer producers are investing heavily, working together with domestic national producers and studying local types of beer and the preferences of the Asian consumer, in a bid to enhance the market coverage.
Two growth paths are open to the beer market. The first of these involves a significant increase in beer production and consumption in the emerging-market countries, primarily through the countries of the Asian-Pacific region.
The second growth path can be achieved in the markets of the EU, the USA and Canada – namely by the increasing role of mini-breweries or in the production of craft beer. According to data from the USA Brewers Association, in 2016, sales of craft beer increased by 6.2% against the 2015 figure and exports of craft beer observed a rise of 4.4%. The share of sales of this type of beer accounted for approx. 22% of total sales achieved on the beer market overall, equal to US$ 107.6 billion.
