Advents in medical research has helped treat many different forms of cancer, however, the underlying mechanism of cancer has yet to be figured out. Cancer cells look almost identical to non-cancerous cells forcing researchers to use non-selective processes to treat the disease. Non-selective cancer treatments like often kill all cells in sight killing both normal and cancer cells, this often results in harmful side effects like hair loss, nausea, weakness, and more.
Many medical researchers are now pivoting to find selective treatments for cancer, one of these methods being gene therapy. Dr.Xinping Song’s 3D Prostate Clinic in China is on the forefront of next generation gene therapy and looks to build on traditional Chinese medicine to treat cancer in a selective manner.

Westernized countries such as those found in the European Union and North America often have higher incidences of cancer compared to Asian countries, however, researchers in China have noted that prostate cancer is on the rise. Dr.Xinping Song’s 3D Prostate Treatment at the 3D Urology and Prostate Clinic has been investigating holistic and gene based therapies in hopes to finding a method of treating cancer cells specifically in prostate cancer patients. Gene based therapy looks to add modified genes into the body to replace missing or damaged genes. Gene therapy has been used to cure diseases like Adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency by turning on the immune function needed to produce the enzyme. This same treatment method can be used to treat cancer once mechanisms of the disease are better understood.
Once an understanding of what gene(s) needs to be added/altered scientists can use genetic engineering through bacterial or yeast plasmids to create the nucleotide sequence of the gene of interest. These sequences are then tacked onto a virus vector that will transport the gene sequence to the part of the body where it will be transcribed. This process allows for specific genes to be added where they are lacking and could be used to stop cells growing in cancerous tumors.
Gene therapy looks to be a promising method of treating cancer but medical researchers need to continue to research and ensure that the genes being put into the body are not causing any enzymatic cascades that could be harmful.
