According to market research conducted by IndexBox, global production of oats was estimated at 5,001 million USD in 2014, which was 199 million USD less than in 2013, and 272 million USD (or 5%) less than the peak production level recorded in 2008. In physical terms, oat production showed mixed dynamics over the last few years. The gradual decrease over the period from 2007 to 2010 was followed by growth from 2011 to 2013. In 2014, however, global production in physical terms decreased by 4%, and stood at 22,966 thousand tonnes, which was far below the highest levels of oat production in 2008 (25,863 thousand tonnes).
The countries with the largest production of oats in absolute volumes were the Russian Federation (5,274 thousand tonnes), Canada (2,907 thousand tonnes), Poland (1,459 thousand tonnes), Australia (1,240 thousand tonnes), Finland (1,039 thousand tonnes) and the U.S. (1,011 thousand tonnes).
From 2007 to 2014, the most notable drop in oat production among the main producing countries was recorded in Canada (-6.6% per year), while the other two global leaders (the Russian Federation and Poland) experienced more modest paces of decline. Over the period under review, 63% of the decrease in global oat production was attained by Canada, against 4% of the increase attributed to the Russian Federation.
