While the Canadian alcohol market is dominated by wines, only a handful of distilleries produce spirits like vodka, whiskey or rum. A new distillery, Dixon Distilled Spirits intends to provide high quality liquors to satisfy the growing Canadian appetite for these hard liquors. Located in the university town of Guelph, Ontario, Dixon Distilled Spirits is the perfect entrepreneurial enterprise; not only is brewing hard liquor more cost effective—with lower upfront costs and higher retail markup—but the life cycle of brewing hard liquors is flexible and short enough that there is inherent scalability to demand.
Dixon Distilled Spirits is the brainchild of Jeremie and Vicky Dixon, and will be partnership involving other likeminded entrepreneurs. The company will initially focus on brewing premium white whiskey, vodka and white rye, with almost all crafting components found locally in the rich, surrounding farmlands. Initial batches will be in 2,000 liter production sizes.
Dixon Distilled Spirits expects mild if any competition, as there are only a handful of craft distilleries in the Ontario region. More importantly, Dixon Distilled Spirits is well situated to produce and distribute their product to the local university student population. Once firmly established, Dixon Distilled Spirits will expand its distribution to other regions and possibly the U.S. Jeremie and Vicky also plan on incorporating the company within three years.
To secure the funding necessary to launch Dixon Distilled Spirits, Jeremie and Vicky Dixon have sponsored a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise $12,000. In return for financial support, contributors may receive signature bottles of liquor from the initial production batches and tours of the distillery.
