WASHINGTON, DC – 12 Jun, 2017 – The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) Sustainable Development Committee will host an interactive moderated panel discussion featuring first-account stories from refugees on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the United Nations Foundation. This event is open to the public and free for students as well as current UNA-NCA members.
Since the inauguration of President Trump in January 2017, refugees and other displaced persons have witnessed an increase in negative perceptions of their presence in the United States mostly notably after Executive Order 13769. Despite the blocking of this travel ban through a federal judge Derrick Watson, mainstream Americans continue to hold insufficient knowledge on the circumstances pertaining to refugees and other displaced persons.
This event seeks to dispel the associated myths and misconceptions and will highlight personal accounts of past and present refugees in the local Washington, DC area drawing on the diverse perspectives of the African, Asian, Latin American, European and Middle Eastern communities. The program will also look at the current situation as addressed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) drawing on the past and present policies and actions taken at the local, national and global level.
The event will be moderated by Mr. Patrick Realiza, Chair of the UNA-NCA Sustainable Development Committee.
Featured panelists include:
- Ms. Niemat Ahmadi, President, Darfur Women Action Group
- Ms. Faith Akovi Cooper, Regional Advisor, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre
- Mr. Larry Yungk, Senior Resettlement Officer, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
