Presented above is a line chart from https://trends.google.com/trends/ which is a visual representation demonstrating aggregate world wide interest in ‘south america travel’ from the years of 2012 to 2017. This 5 year trend represents the relative number of people using the Google search engine to find information related to ‘south america travel’. This data considers consumers near the beginning of their customer journey, who might not even have a specific country in mind. A consumer with more buyer intent may search for a peru travel guide instead of searching the more general phrase ‘south america travel’.

We’re considering the broader continent of South America for the purpose of this research. Individual regions like Patagonia, Antarctica or the Amazon, are also excluded from this specific analysis because interest in a particular region doesn’t represent overall interest accurately. Cruises to South America and travel to specific sites like Machu Picchu or the Inca Trail is excluded from the research for the same reason.

The trend line of Google searches relates to consumer interest with regards to this report. When consumers seek to find information, purchase a product or service, or to simply ask a question they often consult Google. Therefore, due to the strong correlation between buyer intent and Google searches many useful trends can be drawn from this data.

The largest number of searches for ‘south america travel’ occurs during the month of January. This pattern is consistent on an annual basis. No matter which year is concerned, January consistently represents the largest quantity of searches.

This period is relevant because it occurs in the middle of Winter across the Northern hemisphere. During winter, many consumers who reside in the northern hemisphere seek warmer climates in countries like Brazil, Peru, or Argentina, and therefore South America is a likely candidate for their interest.

Over the previous five years, interest in traveling to South America is still strong regardless of seasonal changes. People are actively looking for cultural, natural, and otherwise exciting places to visit and things to do in South America.

In this image, we can see the relative interest in ‘south america travel’ among different countries. This particular data provided by Google.

Note: A higher value means a higher proportion of all queries, not a higher absolute query count. So a tiny country where 80% of the queries are for “bananas” will get twice the score of a giant country where only 40% of the queries are for “bananas”.

In practical terms, that means that the average Australian is more likely to have searched for ‘south america travel’ than the average American.
