LOS ANGELES, Calif. – 23 August, 2017 – The inaugural Budart Festival features an international exhibition of meditative artworks curated with a dynamic series of programs to reflect on the beauty, richness and significance of meditation. The six-day program will take place at the University of the West in Rosemead from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on September 16-21.
The exhibition of paintings and installations brings together internationally recognized artists who directly convey their personal practice of meditation into their artwork. Casting ancient wisdom through the medium of contemporary art, this show gives attendees the opportunity to intuitively experience the illumination and serenity of meditation simply by observing works of art.
The exposition features: a vibrant collection of Pointillist paintings by Sherab Khandro, immersive contemporary pieces inspired by traditional Tibetan painting by Pema Rinzin, intensely emotive meditative paintings by Nikolai Makarov, Buddhist-inspired graffiti by Kimyon Huggins, intricate nature paintings by Anna Maria Velasco, the “Wheel of Life” installation by Hector Marcel, the Gamelatron musical installation by Aaron Kuffner, and “Art of Hope,” a breathtaking series of over twenty paintings created by female artists incarcerated in Mexico. A special screening will be previewed of Sarah Barab’s independent films entitled, “Naked Mind” and “Heavily Meditated.”
The festival program invites you to take part in a wide range of art and meditation workshops, meditative music concerts, talks by prominent speakers and performances. Featured events include: Katherine Patiño Miranda’s “Luncheon,” a performance exploring the concept of interdependence; world music concerts and sound healing sessions by celebrated musician Denis Kucherov of the band Samhey, Sufi and Bollywood singer Kailash, and opera and mantra singer Sangeeta Kaur; “Journey to Your Future Self” meditation workshop with Peter Oppermann; and Sherab Khandro’s workshop on meditation and art.

Budart is an international community of professional artists who express the state of meditation in their artworks. Using a variety of artistic media (painting, sculpture, installation, music, etc.), they explore ways of capturing images, feelings and insights born in meditation and conveying them creatively to the public – immediate and unmediated by thought, language or translation. To promote the principles of meditative art and make it a more tangible experience, they organize workshops and art retreats for professional artists and those interested in learning about their approach.
