Akintunde Disu, social entrepreneur and artist, has started a fund raising campaign on Kickstarter for Plastic Fantastic, a project associated with beach shorts. The campaign is for creating a limited collection of beach shorts that will be made from recycled plastic bottles. The aim is to bring awareness about plastic waste and its hazardous effects on our life and nature.
“At the PoP Beach Club, plastic waste is a reality that we have to deal with in a big way,” says Akintunde Disu. “We are making an effort to change this situation through the PoP beach shorts project. These pair of shorts could change our world, from plastic waste to education wealth.”
The project is aimed at creating a limited collection of Pop beach shorts made from recycled plastic bottles. They are unique as they have a four-way stretch and are hydrophobic. The lightweight shorts can dry quickly drying too. They have been designed keeping in mind the passion of the locals for water sports. The detailing of the product captures this aspect very effectively.
The PoP beach shorts have inner draw strings and are without the traditional outer seams for greater comfort. They also carry the signature waxed African print cotton pockets and candy striped piping for that style factor. The shorts will be made available in 12 colors to make sure there is something for everyone.
Our idea of PoP beach shorts came from the passion for the environment among the locals. The focus is especially on the children, who are generally without any formal education and hence find themselves helpless. Besides, the negligence of the people has also affected and the marine life some of which now faces the risk of extinction.
The campaign can be seen as a movement that aims to highlight the benefits of eco-fashion and conscious living by raising their voices against plastic proliferation. The other key area of thrust is improving literacy among the poor living in areas that are largely inaccessible.
The previous campaign by the artist was a success and the funds raised could help the community produce 1200 meters of fabric in 12 different colors. They now are looking up to contributors on Kickstarter again to help the raising £3000 to fund the manufacturing process.
The money generated from the sale of the shorts will be used for tasks that can help the Pop Beach Club’s growth as a company. It will allow them to scale and minimize plastic proliferation and encourage child education. There are many exciting incentives on offer to contributors based on their level of participation.
