Launched on October 1, 1999, Shanghai Daily is a member of Shanghai United Media Group. It’s the first local English-language daily newspaper on the Chinese mainland and is the primary source of information for English readers in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta Region.
Shanghai Daily launched a new news platform SHINE, signifying its transformation from a traditional newspaper-oriented operation into a digital media. The new platform includes a news website as well as a mobile application. It provides breaking news, in-depth stories and insightful analysis about Shanghai and China. SHINE features a complete variety of stories and news feeds on interesting people, fashion, food, culture, art, and much more. The website also contains original documentary-style videos related to the articles.
The website features a large-screen headline picture and an infinite scroll design that allows users to read more news stories with fewer clicks. Mobile app users can quickly read news by swiping between and clicking on the categories displayed on the screen and share those stories through various social networking sites. The mobile application can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store or other major Android app stores. Also, shine can be available on various social network platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WeChat and many others.
While SHINE is highly gaining the audience, the Shanghai Daily newspaper will continue to be published. Readers will find links in the paper inviting them to learn more details of a story by checking out related pictures and videos. Shanghai Daily has been in high demand in its print form and is now experiencing an adventure into the e-landscape, which is supported by its loyal readers and several distinguished figures around the world.
The website www.shine.cn has been live since August 1 alongside www.shanghaidaily.com and has been rapidly gaining in popularity.
The traffic to shine.cn has been growing about 15 percent day by day, and the page views and the length of time spent on the new website per visitor have been three to four times over shanghaidaily.com.
Interestingly, China is not the top source of clicks for shine.cn. The United States now has the most users, accounting for 45 percent of the website’s readership.
