The 12th Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS-XII) was held in New York City on October 30–31, 2017. The Beijing Hua Hong Group was presented with the 2017 Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Award for its investment and construction of Harbin Hua Hong World City. The forum this year focused on “Effectively Planning and Managing Urban Spatial Development to Implement New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 11”. The 3rd United Nations Housing and Sustainable Development Conference, which concluded in October 2016, passed the New Urban Agenda. This Agenda stressed the promotion of sustainable cities and human settlements that are shared by everyone with the implementation of the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 11, which is as follows: build sustainable cities and human settlements with inclusiveness, safety, and recoverability.
The two-day GFHS-XII discussed ten topics including integrated, multicentered, and balanced regional open policies, standards and examples; and safe, inclusive, convenient, environmentally friendly and quality public space.
GFHS-XII aims to present a high-level information exchange platform for relevant countries, regions, and even global stakeholders. The information will include that of enhancing capacity construction; summarizing and sharing effective policies, standards, approaches, and best examples that have been approved; promoting the rapid and efficient implementation of SDGs and the New City Agenda in regions and cities; promoting bilateral and multilateral economic and technological cooperation in sustainable cities development; and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
GFHS-XII voted the 2017 Sustainable Cities and Human Settlement Awards (SCAHSA Awards), which were supported and guided by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and other organizations. These awards have been given out 11 times.
