If you’ve ever tried to sleep on a plane – and who hasn’t? – you know that it can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience. The problem is that the conventional airplane pillow effectively leaves your shoulder supporting your head, but the moment you fall asleep all your muscles relax and you wind up moving and immediately waking up again.
Dak Steiert an aerospace engineer from Stanford University, has the answer. He has designed The Perfect Travel Pillow, which is not only soft and comfortable, but also securely straps to the headrest. It has a supportive side cushion to rest your head in the perfect position for falling easily asleep.
“We’ve carefully designed this pillow to provide the most comfortable, supportive, and sleep-promoting system that has ever been available,” said Steiert. “It has adjustable straps to fit any size airplane headrest securely. And the design can be used in many cars, buses, and other vehicles as well.”
Why does The Perfect Travel Pillow work better than conventional airplane pillows? “With a standard doughnut pillow, you are sleeping on your own shoulder, which means as soon as you fall asleep and your muscles relax, your shoulder and entire body relaxes,” explained Steiert. “The pillow slides off and your head falls forward or to the side, waking you up.
“Our pillow has a plush neck support which puts your head at the proper angle and position to prevent you from falling forward when you sleep. Because it is securely fastened to the headrest, The Perfect Travel Pillow doesn’t move, creating a stable and very comfortable sleeping system.”
Prototypes of the new travel pillow have been used on airplanes and have met with universal approval. It is FAA-compliant and can be attached to a carry-on bag for easy transport.
This new item has a patent pending but needs additional funding before it can go into production. Steiert needs about $12,000 to cover materials, manufacturing, shipping and marketing. At time of writing, the project is currently over 40% funded after only the first few days of the campaign, a strong start so far.
In order to generate this capital, he has launched a Kickstarter campaign, which can be viewed at www.kickstarter.com/projects/1679228481/the-perfect-travel-pillow.
Steiert is hoping that weary travelers all over the world will see the value of this new product and help fund the project.
Donations of any amount are welcome. For a pledge of $27, backers will receive The Perfect Travel Pillow once it goes into production – arriving ready for your travels in early January.
“I do a lot of traveling so I worked with a team to develop the Perfect Travel Pillow,” said Steiert. “With this new pillow, your days of wriggling around and trying to find a good sleeping position on the plane are over.”
