Illinois youth boxer Joseph Awinongya Jr has won the prestigious Silver Gloves National Championship in the nine to 10-year-old division. Awinongya competed in the Boxing Junior Olympics in Charleston, West Virginia in June 2017. It was there that the young boxing prodigy won the 85-pound division title.
Although Awinongya is just 10-years old, he has already become the most famous boxer in Illinois. The young fighter was trained by his father, Joseph Awinongya Sr, who is an experienced professional boxer and trainer. Awinongya Sr traveled the globe as a fighter before settling in Illinois and opening his own boxing gym. Awinongya Sr was born in Ghana and was able to travel the world as a fighter. He had bouts in Africa, Europe and the United States. He formerly boxed as one of legendary boxing promoter Don King’s fighters. In fact, King brought Awinongya Sr to the US as part of his stable of boxers.
As a trainer, Awinongya Sr has trained a number of boxers. One of his most well-known was Osumanu Adama. The fighter twice battled Daniel Geale in middleweight bouts. Awinongya Sr also led Adama against Gennady Golovkin in a middleweight fight. Awinongya has now turned his attention to his son, who has won four National Boxing Championships for his age range. Awinongya Jr has accomplished something no other amateur in the state of Illinois has before as he is the first in history to achieve the feat from the state.
The official proclamation honoring Awinongya Jr stated:
“Where as it is the intent of the Will County Board and Will County Executive to recognize outstanding achievement of individuals and organizations in Will County, and
Whereas Joseph “Jo Jo” Awinongya Jr traveled to Charleston, West Virginia in June to compete in the 2017 USA Boxing Junior Olympics, and
Whereas Joseph won the 9-to-10 year old, 85 pound division, becoming a Silver Gloves National Champion, continuing his momentum to become a two-time national champion, and
Whereas Joseph started boxing at the age of five and began to compete at the age of eight; at nine years old, he has already had 16 amateur bouts and ranks #1 in the Nation, and
Whereas Joseph is a straight “A” student at Eisenhower Academy School in Joliet, and
Whereas the International Boxing Federation (IBF)/United State Boxing Association has presented a belt to Joseph Jr, congratulating him for his successes, and focus, and determination.
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the Will County Board and Will County Executive hereby recognize Joseph “Jo Jo” Awinongya Jr for becoming a Silver Gloves National Champion.
Be it further resolved, that the Will County Board and Will County Executive wish Joseph Awinongya Jr best of luck and success in all future endeavours.

The younger Awinongya is just an up and coming boxer. The 10-year-old is an accomplished student at the Eisenhower Academy, and is a straight A student. In addition to boxing, both father and son have recently appeared in the film “Fight in America”. The film profiles the duo as Awinongya Sr takes his son on a media tour of the US. The youngster receives information and advice from notable boxing veterans as he prepares for his future in boxing. The film showcases the young man as the future of boxing, and gives fans insight into his life.
With a film and promising amateur career to Awinongya Jr’s name, the sky’s the limit for the youth boxer. With his father in his corner, the young Awinongya is on the path to boxing superstardom.
