Heather Shourds, the Triathlete Made of Grit and Gumption, Reveals Her Story

Heather Shourds, the Tampa based personal fitness trainer, has revealed for the first time her true life story and how she overcame obstacles with faith, dedication and hard work. Today, Heather can be found training hard for the Triathlon World Championships with Team USA to be held in Gold Coast Australia Sept 2018.

As an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and Sports Conditioning Specialist, Heather is a triathlete/duathlete, who offers a wide variety of personal training, livestrong training, swimming lessons and triathlon coaching at the New Tampa YMCA. Her journey towards this level of professional competence however was a difficult one, she has struggled with low self -confidence and weight issues. Heather had an accident at the age of 20 that left her in a wheel chair and was told that she may never walk again, this also attributed to her weight fluctuation, making her overweight for the majority of her early life.

Heather attempted several ways to stay fit, including dieting and even became bulimic for a while. At 30 she was now pre-diabetic, allergic to many foods, and with high cholesterol, was likely to suffer from a heart attack and stroke. However, after signing up with a personal trainer, Heather took on triathlon training (swim, bike and run), and at the age of 31 started on her professional athletic career. She ascribed this discovery of her talent to God.

Positive Results came soon and in 2012, Heather won her age group and was invited to attend the AG National Championships, but unfortunately could not. She then qualified   first in her age group at her First Worlds Qualifier, but the course was marked incorrect. At that point, Heather then decided to go for Duathlon. In 2016, she qualified for Duathlon Team USA in Penticton, Canada 2017. She soon qualified to race in the Sarasota Bradenton Festival and made Triathlon Team USA 2018!

On September 13, 2018, Heather will represent the USA in an international race in Gold Coast, Australia. Today she has set a goal of being listed in the top 10 athletes and is now training hard to be ready for the race of her life and make the USA proud at Gold Coast World Championships on Team USA 2018.  Heather is currently seeking donations and or sponsorship: monetary, award tickets, hotel points which would be used to cover airfare, hotel accommodations, ground transportation and meal cost during her stay in Australia while representing Team USA.

Being able to compete and represent Triathlon Team USA 2018 is a dream come true. I am now seeking monetary, hotel points, airline sky-miles donations and or sponsorship’s help me make my dreams into reality by racing in Australia!” says Heather.

Heather holds certification from ACE and ITCA as a Certified Professional Triathlon Coach. She is also a ACE Certified Sports Injury Specialist and has been featured in the Tampa Bay Times, along with People Magazine in January 2018 for her incredible personal journey, which has led all the way to her recent qualification as a 2017 Team USA Duathlete and 2018 Team USA Triathlete!

Heather is hoping that her story will inspire individuals from all walks of life with different social economic backgrounds, age and ethnicities.
