21 Apr, 2018 – TORONTO, ON – HiMama (www.himama.com), a software company serving child care and preschool programs globally has become one of only seven Canadian software technology companies to be certified as a B Corporation (Benefit Corporation). Other B Corp certified software companies include Hootsuite, Benevity and Fiix.
Similar to fair-trade or organic certification, B Corp certification is awarded only after a rigorous third-party assessment and audit. Commenting on the certification, Ron Spreeuwenberg, HiMama’s Co-Founder and CEO says, “Achieving certified B Corp status is an important milestone for us. This certification is one way that we can signal to the technology sector that social purpose can and should coexist with growth. Joining the highly respected B Corp community also demonstrates our commitment to driving forward positive change for the under-represented early childhood education community that we are deeply passionate about”.
Early childhood professionals are systemically underpaid and undervalued. 43% of American preschool teachers using HiMama are under the low income threshold defined by the US Department of Education.
The average salary defined by payscale.com for preschool teachers is $12.36/hr, lower than dog walkers and many retail workers.
“Providing an exceptional parent communication platform, free professional development resources, and advocacy around quality child care are all central to our goal of improving learning outcomes for children aged zero to five”, says Spreeuwenberg.
The technology company has demonstrated their commitment to the professional development of early childhood educators by providing high-quality early learning resources through their website, podcast, newsletter and the Early Childhood Educator of the Year Award, whose volunteer jury panel includes the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) CEO Rhian Allvin, and ZERO TO THREE Chief Policy Officer Myra Jones-Taylor, and Canadian MPP Peter Tabuns among others.
In addition to HiMama’s commitment to improving learning outcomes for young children, they also stand apart from other tech companies for their impressive women-to-men diversity ratio. 70% of the HiMama team identifies as women, and 50% of the Board of Directors are women, including their Chief Technology Officer, Alana Frome.
HiMama (www.himama.com) is improving learning outcomes for children aged zero to five. They are a social purpose business that connects families with the early childhood professionals who serve them. Thousands of child care professionals use HiMama to involve families in children’s learning and development with hundreds of millions of moments recorded to-date. HiMama is based in Toronto, Canada.
