This critical task is ensured by the automotive tappets. The tappets take on the dual role of acting as a guide to the cylinder drum to keep it on track and also as a cushion or impact component to make sure the excess pressure and impact on the engine valves passes on and gets absorbed onto these tappets. The tappets thus perform the dual task of path aligning and excess pressure absorption.

These tappets were manufactured with round heads similar to ball bearings, assuming the round head would minimise the oncoming impact and reduce wear. Instead the round shaped low surface impact resulted in increased wear of the tappet. Hence automotive industry later started preferring flat head tappets.
