CHS: Continuing Its Passionate Medical Service For The People Of Carriacou

Known for its pristine beaches and European historic influence, the Caribbean Island of Carriacou is truly a must visit place for tourists around the world.

It is considered as the biggest island in the Caribbean which is home to Europeans, Africans and natives with around 8,000 in its total population with its capital city, Hillsborough. The island is also known for its wide variety of spirits and rums since it served as a port and hiding place for pirates in the 17th century.

Its noteworthy beaches are in Paradise Beach and at the Anse La Roche.

Despite its very small population, Carriacou is very lucky to have its own good healthcare services and facilities particularly the Carriacou Health Services (CHS) which leveled up the health care services for the locals after it was established in 2005.

CHS is very dedicated to upholding the best medical care by providing quality assurance to its community and Carriacou’s neighboring islands.

Before CHS opened its doors on July 29, 2005, Carriacou had a very poor health care service to its community. Most of the people of Carriacou have to go to Grenada or farther than this place, particularly in Trinidad and Tobago to seek for quality medical care especially for patients who suffer chronic and serious illnesses.

However, the 9500-square foot complex that is situated in the heart of Hillsborough forever changed the medical and healthcare service to the people of Carriacou. The two-story hospital can accommodate more than a dozen patients that need to be admitted.

The hospital’s founders Dr. Joseph McAuley, a Grenadian general surgeon, Dr. Carol McIntosh, Obstetrician/Gynecologist and the hospital’s designer Leo Joseph collaborated to make their plans into reality.

Dr. McAuley is a veteran surgeon for 27 years in New York City, before he transferred to Grenada and moved to Carriacou where he saw the current medical and health care service situation of the locals there prompting him to make an immediate move to provide quality health care service for the locals in the island with the help of another former New York-based McIntosh Joseph who led the construction and design of the hospital.

Their plan was intricate and ambitious. They decided to build a healthcare facility that can cater to all the medical needs of the people of Carriacou and took them almost a year to complete it. They collaborated with various architects and planners who are experts in ambulatory care so that they can meet international and United States (US) medical standards that are followed by healthcare service centers in the United States. The completion of the hospital dramatically improved the healthcare service for the people of Carriacou up to this day.

The people there doesn’t need to visit their neighboring islands’ hospitals and medical centers to seek medical attention and instead, a lot of people from Carriacou’s small neighboring islets in the Vincentian and Grenada Grenadines Group of Islands go there.

CHS boasts a very competitive and quality services like its four-examination rooms, a radiology department, consultation room, operating room, holding area or the triage area, the patient conference room, laboratory and of course it has its very own pharmacy where all the needed medicine are available for a very affordable price.

In CHS you can expect safe and reliable medical and healthcare services because it has enough staff on duty that are all skilled and knowledgeable to handle the patients that need medical attention. Since it follows US medical quality and standards, the hospital staff are required to record the complete as well as the accurate patient information and medical findings which is completely confidential and secured.

It is also open 24/7 ready to handle emergency situations and patients who need first aid. Making it safer is that it is completely clean and hygienic to make sure there is no risk of infection and transmittable diseases.
