Los Angeles Children’s Bookstore Announces Children’s Workshops and School Visits

Booksicals a Los Angeles children’s bookstore has announced that they are running summer workshops for children, and are committed to continuing to visit schools throughout the year. Booksicals was created by author Susan Chodakiewitz who combined her passion for children’s books and musical theater by creating books for kids with musical theater soundtracks.

A “booksical” is a picture book brought to life as a children’s musical. Booksicals can be performed for kids or by kids as school projects or children’s theater. They are unique within the industry and encourage kids who might not previously have been regarded as avid readers to be inspired and fall in love with the pleasure of reading.

Susan Chodakiewitz founded Booksicals in 2009. In collaboration with her neurosurgeon husband and other experts in the field of brain development, Susan developed a reading experience that stimulates brain development using sound, touch, taste, smell and the power of story. Susan regularly collaborates with musicians, artists, teachers, and technologists to develop the most exciting multi-sensory reading experiences. It’s her mission to encourage a love for reading and to unlock the immense power of our children’s vivid imagination and creativity.

“The Sensory Reading Experience stimulates all five senses through interactive storytelling, story related sensory games and sensory activities,” said Susan. “Kids are spending way too much time in the virtual world,” she added.  “Booksicals books and musical ebooks encourage kids to get up from their sedentary digital activities and move, dance and sing with books!” Booksicals provide a novel and new category of Los Angeles children’s books.

Susan has experienced a great deal of success with her musical/audio ebooks for children. The books have encouraged and nurtured many children’s undiscovered love of the theatre. Booksicals books have the added advantage that they can easily be adapted into live performances for kids or by kids. In 2011 – 2012 Booksicals partnered with both Gap Kids and Westin Kids Club to promote reading with store events and book-giveaways of children’s books in Los Angeles.

Booksicals formed a successful partnership in 2013 with the international tea and coffee company The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. This resulted in the creation of the picture book Master Davey and the Magic Tea House. In collaboration with CBTL tea master David De Candia, CBTL created the Blue Tiger Tea based on the Blue Tiger character in the book. CBTL held celebrity readings at local stores, schools, orphanages and children’s hospital around the world. The Magic Tea House Experience for kids is a Sensory Reading presentation that Susan performs at elementary and middle schools.
