Global Surfactant Market By Type (Anionic, Cationic, Non-Ionic Surfactants, Amphoteric, Silicone Surfactant, Others), Origin (Synthetic, Bio-Based), Application (Household Detergents, Personal Care, Lubricant & Fuel Additive,  Industrial & Institutional Cleaners, Food Processing, Oilfield Chemicals, Agricultural Chemicals, Textiles, Emulsion Polymerization, Paints & Coatings, Construction and Others), By Geography (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, Middle East & Africa)

Surfactants are both hydrophilic and hydrophobic components. Hydrophilic are water-soluble and hydrophobic are water-insoluble (oil-soluble) components. This property allows surfactants to form micelles of oils and water. Hence, break the surface tension between the immiscible liquids. The surfactants are prime components in several personal care products. Personal care is one of the key contributors to end-users for surfactants owing to its applications in a wide variety of personal care products such as shampoos, skin creams, lotions and many more. Surfactants are used as main ingredients in personal care segment as foaming agents, dispersants, emulsifiers, solubilizing agents, cleansers  conditioners and different other products.. The selection of surfactant for different personal care product is a huge task. Specific surfactant can be used for various products such as shampoos, baby lotions, hair gels and others. Its specificity depends whether it’s creating a rich, creamy lather or foam for washing, bathing and shaving products or softening, lubricating and moisturizing for skin products; or creating an attractive protective layer used in cosmetic products. The skin-compatible surfactants act as emulsifiers and it also stabilize the fine water or oil droplets in creams and thin lotions. The emulsions in skin care cosmetics and sun screens are easily absorbed by the skin and do not cause a shiny, greasy film or leave any grease spots on clothing. The Surfactants also enable the fine dispersion of color pigments in make-up and lipstick. They disperse perfumes in toilet waters, aftershaves and hair lotions and are also used in hair dyes and hair care products as well as shaving creams and toothpastes. According to an article published recently by the “CNBC news” the surfactant market will make  revenue of approximately USD 46.20 billion in the year 2022.The personal care is projected to be highly  expanding  and diverse market. According to an article published in 2017  by “Bio Verlag” U.S. market for personal care products has  grown with the market value of USD 5.7 billion in the year 2016, the growth is of 9.2% as compared to the sales in the year 2015. Various new strategies made by key players are also expected to increase the growth of the market such as establishing new plants, implementing new technologies.  For instance, preparation of amino acid soaps derived from dodecenyl succinic anhydride. Introducing new products by the key players is likely to boost the growth of the market for example; BASF SE (Germany) along with Solazyme (France) introduced their first commercial microalgae based betaine surfactant. The product is being sold under the brand name Dehyton AO 45.  It is useful for the applications in home and personal care products. This product is an alternative to amidopropyl betaine which has its application in various products such as shampoos and liquid soaps.

The growing demand for personal care products all over the world and specifically in U.S. is driving the growth of surfactants market. Personal care products are highly in demand owing to expanding middle class and their increasing disposable income is allowing them to splurge more on luxuries such as expensive personal care products. This, in turn, ensures a steady demand for flourishing personal care products for the surfactants market

The strict legislation laid down in U.S. for the control usage of synthetic surfactants in various applications such as in personal care products is a major restraint for the global surfactants market. The usage of synthetic surfactants in personal care products can cause  skin irritation, eye irritation, neurotoxicity, etc. for this various regulation by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on different products have been imposed on the manufacture of the surfactant. Surfactants that meet the safer choice criteria are acceptable for use in the various products under Safer Choice products which bypass sewage treatment and require approval of the Criteria for Environmental Fate & Toxicity for Chemicals. The surfactants that are listed on the Safer Chemical Ingredients List such as mixtures with varying chain lengths, degrees of branching, and numbers of ethoxyl (EO) and propoxyl (PO) groups determine the aquatic toxicity and rate of biodegradation of the chemical.  The majority of the surfactants used in detergents are made of petrochemicals which remain in the environment for a long period of time and causes harmful effects to the environment. This has triggered imposition of stringent regulation on the manufactures. Various regulations that are imposed by the FDA on the surfactants and related products are as follows

  • Sec. 172.858 for the control usage of Propylene glycol alginate to be used in various food products and skin care products
  • Sec. 172.710 for the controlled use of surfactants Adjuvants for pesticide use dilutions by a grower or applicant prior to application to the growing crop and should not be used in more than 5% of the weight.

Therefore, as various regulations are imposed over theproductio of the surfatants and its application the major player are focusing major problem in the manufacture of surfactant which has hindered the growth of the market

Bio based surfactants are bio-degradable and have usage in skin care products, detergents, personal care products and other application. Therefore, key players are investing more in the R&D and innovations of the bio based surfactant products such as:

  • DuPont (U.S.) in a joint venture with Butamax Advanced Biofuels LLC (U.S.) has confirmed that their bio-butanol demonstration facility in Hull, UK, It started in 3Q/2010. Commercial production started in mid-2012. The DuPont is also looking to produce sugar-based biobutanol from Brazil, which will then be exported to strategic markets, including US and Europe.
  • BASF SE (Germany), which is a global leader for manufacturing, trading and imports, and exports chemical products launched its first commercial surfactant derived from microalgae oil, a high performance algal for use in home and personal care applications. The new product is a high- performance alternative to amidopropyl betaine products that require rich and gentle foam such as in shampoos, liquid soaps, hand dishwashing liquids, and other applications. These products are amphoteric surfactants and are majorly used in cosmetic, toiletry and home care applications having vast benefits such as good detergency, good foam properties and foam stabilization, hard water compatibility, mildness to skin and hair, ability to reduce irritation of anionic systems, viscosity building, and conditioning effect.
  • Clariant (Switzerland), which is a world leader in specialty chemicals new platform products for the home care market has launched a high purity colorant for cosmetics and the company has also launched renewable ingredients. It will pave the way for label-free hand dishwashing liquids and less use of preservatives. The company is focusing on giving customers different products in home care, personal care and fabric cares the solutions in an effective yet more environmentally-compatible way.

The surfactants are used in various applications such as in household detergents, personal care, industrial & institutional cleaners, food processing, oilfield chemicals, agricultural chemicals, textiles, emulsion polymerization, paints & coatings, construction and other applications. Key players are involved in the implementation of the various strategies for the development of the surfactants coupled with new products launch by the company.
