Willis is a bear with a destiny. He is a friend, a keeper of secrets, and a sharer of worries, fears and tears. Or at least he will be. Upon his shelf he waits until he is taken to a child who needs him, and he is their friend, their constant companion, and ally. He is always there, teaching, helping, healing. A friend until the time eventually comes for them to part and another child needs him. Willis has been taken to a new friend, Lucas. Lucas is sick; he has to visit the hospital and take horrible medicine all the time. Willis offers Lucas a friendship he so desperately needs, and helps Lucas enjoy all that he can, until the time comes when Willis is no longer needed.

If you ever want to teach your child about mindfulness, then Tricia Willemsen’s Willis: Something Was About to Happen is certainly a good step. Willis teaches Lucas a game about being in the ‘right now,’ where you only think about the present moment, and are aware of all it is without worrying what waits in the future. Be warned, you’re going to want to read this book first before you read it with your child just to prepare for any parts you’ll find moving. I have to admit there were parts of this book that really played with my heartstrings. It is really moving and beautifully written and illustrated. Maritza Miari’s charming pictures enhance a story that child and adult alike can learn from and enjoy. A lovely tale of an emotional journey.”
