For as long as anyone can remember, magicians and laymen alike have been asking ‘Why aren’t there more women in magic?” And there hasn’t been a sufficient answer to that question… until now.
In an unapologetically bold and opinionated piece – unlike anything the magic community at large has seen before – professional magician and speaker Rosemary Reid answers this question.
Having recently delivered a TEDx Talk which garnered thousands of views online (“Magic Isn’t Real (and Other Lies We Tell Ourselves)”, Rosemary is receiving international acclaim for her gifts in the art of speech writing, spoken word delivery and of course, magic.
Performing magic professionally for over 15 years, Rosemary has spent the last four years delivering inspirational speeches and business-education talks at conferences and retreats across Canada.
“It’s such an important message Rosemary brings to light in this video,” says Aaron Fisher, co-founder of the online magic university Conjuror.Community and world-renowned expert card magician. “The magic community can be very unbalanced and as Rosemary illustrates, our small corner is simply a reflection of society and the world at large.”
Since releasing the video, Rosemary explained that after receiving this question at nearly every show and magic club meeting over the last 15 years, she wanted to go on record with a more thorough answer than she is able to give while working. “It’s a valid question and a complex issue,” she explains, “It can take some time to wrap your head around how deep it all goes, where the problems begin and how we as a community of magicians… and humans in general… can foster positive growth.”
“The response so far has been incredibly encouraging,” Rosemary continues. “This is the biggest project I’ve ever released to the world, so as you can imagine, it’s quite nerve-wracking!”
When asked about the response to her video in the entertainment world, Rosemary shares, “I’ve been amazed by the immense outpouring of support from friends and acquaintances as well as from magicians and performers I’ve yet to meet! I’m hopeful this project will open up many doors of exciting opportunities!”
