Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, has announced the North America Semi-Finalist Winner for Go Green in the City 2018, its global competition to uncover bold ideas and innovative solutions for smarter, more energy-efficient cities.
Now in its eighth year, Go Green in the City has become a major event for business and engineering students worldwide. In 2018, more than 23,000 student innovators from 3,000 universities in 180 countries took part.
The winner and runners-up of the North American Go Green in the City Semi-Finals are:
North America Semi-Finals Winner: Team Enginerds from the U.S. – Angela Carver from Auburn University and Leyla Battista from Emory University – “Using Mean Radiant Temperature to Optimize Thermal Comfort in Commercial Office Spaces”
1st Runner Up: Team EcoCan from Canada – Henry Du and Kanika Kapila from the University of Calgary – “Direct Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide into Methanol”
2nd Runner Up: Urban Intelligence – Javier Sandoval Bustamante and Sofia Alva from Tecnológico de Monterrey – “Intelli Red” a data analytics platform for smart cities”
Team Enginerd’s winning idea conceptualized a first of its kind building automation system sensor that could consider both the four factors of thermal comfort and the need for maximum cost savings. This sensor represents a new facet of building management systems, that increases efficiency, environmental sustainability and improved quality of life.
The Semi-final event is the second phase of the competition. The North American semi-finalist students travelled to Boston, MA from July 17-18, 2018, to present their ideas to develop smarter cities in front of a VIP panel of business leaders and technical experts from Schneider Electric. Prior to the event, the student teams were paired with a professional mentor from Schneider Electric to improve their business case.
“Schneider Electric has a bold vision to solve our planet’s energy paradox. Go Green in the City was designed as a platform for young innovators to become a part of this vision,” said Olivier Blum, Chief Human Resources Officer at Schneider Electric. “Helping students to develop their bold ideas for new sustainable solutions, and gain a foothold in our industry is a great way for us to accelerate positive change.”
Team Enginerd was awarded a $1,000 cash prize and will continue in the competition as a Global Finalist.
Finalists from across the world will travel to Atlanta, GA in November 2018 to present their ideas in front of a VIP panel of international Schneider Electric business leaders and technical experts. The Global winning team will receive a guaranteed job opportunity to begin a career with Schneider Electric. To experience what it is like to work at Schneider Electric, the winning team will also receive a trip to visit two Schneider Electric locations of their choice to experience the culture and share their idea with local leadership.
The Go Green in the City Global Finals will be held in coordination with the Schneider Electric North American Innovation Summit in Atlanta. This is an invite-only business development event, that will showcase how Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure™ IoT-enabled system architecture is shaping the future of energy and automation. This highly anticipated, interactive Summit will give attendees an opportunity to network and learn about innovative solutions for safety, reliability, sustainability, and connectivity.
