A Brief overview of MPN

MPN is an umbrella of blood cancers that 300,000 or more Americans are currently diagnosed with. MPN, otherwise known as Myeloproliferative Neoplasms is when the bone marrow makes too many red blood cells or too many platelets.

An important point is talking about MPN with family and friends educating them on the disease.  Some common symptoms include unexplained itching, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, chest pain, problems concentrating, bone pain, night sweats and shortness of breath.  It is important to note that MPN exists and occurs in three different forms. There’s Polycythemia Vera (PV), which is too many red blood cells, Essential Thrombocythemia (ET), too many platelets, and Myelofibrosis (MF), the scarring of the bone marrow.

Living with MPN

People with MPN can live long, productive and relatively normal lives.  They will need the CBC as the first step in making their diagnosis, so they can start seeing a doctor (hematologist or oncologist) to specifically treat their condition.  Seeing an MPN Specialist is recommended early on to get the best possible treatment plan.  It is also important that the patient becomes knowledgeable about the disease, so they can become their own advocate.

It is important to know there are non-profit organizations dedicated to raising awareness of MPN; helping patients and driving new research.  The MPN Cancer Connection is focused on providing resources for improved patient care, while helping patients.  David Wallace, the Founder and CEO of MPN Cancer Connection, has zeroed in on making more Americans aware of what MPN is all about.  He is a devoted patient advocate and two time cancer survivor, who continues to rally a supportive online community that helps fellow patients.  The MPN Research Foundation is a non-profit organization that plays a pivotal role, focusing on original research projects.

A new video PSA (Public Service Announcement) has been released for viewing on all TV stations, all digital media, Facebook, Twitter, and anywhere else this video message can be inserted and viewed by the public.  September is National Blood Cancer Awareness  Month, therefore timing is crucial.  Bear in mind that MPN is a blood cancer.  Please go to and watch this highly informative PSA.  To maximize MPN Awareness, we ask fellow patients to call your local TV station now and ask them to run this PSA during September.  Here is a resource for contacting local stations.

Donations are needed

We need donations to help further our mission, hiring additional staff to provide more patient resources and creating our first research grant if our goal of $145,000 is met.  Please go to the MPN Cancer Connection Donate Page and make a donation to support the cause.  We have reason to be optimistic.  There have been significant research breakthroughs, but we need more funding.  Discoveries by MPN researchers may have a direct impact on multiple related blood cancers.  We need your help.  Please make yourself aware of MPN and join us in putting an end to it.  It is people like you who will make a difference in helping us win the battle.
