An optical fiber is a type of cable which uses plastic or glass to transfer digital signals in the form of light waves. The light pulses are converted into binary values at the receiving end of an optical fiber which can be read by a computer. The cable consists of two key parts: core and cladding. The core is made of pure glass with materials like silicon dioxide whereas the cladding is doped with small amounts of boron and germanium. Doping the cladding reduces its index of refraction.
In the area of communications, copper wires are being replaced by optical cables, because of its advantages the associated with electrical transmission. Fiber optical cables offer extremely high bandwidth, high security, resistant to electromagnetic interference, and are capable of transmitting signals to long ranges. In the forthcoming years, silicon-based optic fibers are expected to be replaced by polymer optical fibers which offer easy and cost-efficient processing of optical signals. At present, research and development activities are being carried for developing polymer optical fibers as transmission media for an aircraft.
