Elk Grove Unified School District called on a patrol of people to help surprise 2018 Teachers of the Year with the honor. One 2018 Teacher of the Year, Michael Steele — a math teacher at Franklin High School, was awarded his title by not just the prize patrol of officials, but also his mother, who works concessions at Franklin.
Michael Steele grew up in the Elk Grove Unified School District and became interested in mathematics while in Mr. Knock’s math class at Harriet Eddy Middle School. He was inspired by the interesting teacher he had and now uses his passion for math to inspire his own students at Franklin High School. Steele was once again drawn to math while in Mr. Richmond’s pre-calculus class at Laguna Creek High School.
Steele connects with students to help them engage in class and speak up, something he has learned to do himself as a teacher. He wants students to feel confident in his class, and the evidence of Steele’s success as a teacher is shown by his student’s love for the class and the letters of thanks and gifts he receives from current and former students.
As a 2018 Elk Grove Unified Teacher of the Year, Steele went on to be honored as a Sacramento County Teacher of the Year. The Sacramento County Office of Education announced Friday, August 24 at a countywide teacher recognition dinner the two selections made for Sacramento County Teacher of the Year, which were selected by a committee of education professionals who interviewed each local district Teacher of the Year.
