New Aculon White Paper Demonstrates IPX Level 7 and 8 Waterproofing for Printed Circuit Boards

San Diego, CA – September 15, 2018 – According to research from IDC (International Data Corporation), more than 900,00 smartphones are damaged by liquids every day globally. IDC’s research revealed that liquid damage is the second-largest cause of damaged smartphones with the impact estimated to be worth nearly $100 billion each year.

Because of their delicate nature, electronics manufacturers are challenged to find reliable, economical and high-performance materials that minimizes or mitigates the damage that compromises safety and operation of electronic devices. This subject is explored in depth in a new Aculon, Inc. white paper, titled: “Enabling IPX Level 7/8 PCB Waterproof Protection.”

Aculon is a surface modification company that specializes in creating thin film repellant treatments. Using the fundamentals of molecular self-assembly, the Aculon team resolved issues related to gaskets and conformal coatings with the award-winning Aculon NanoProof® Series of coating, which provide up to IPX8 level protection to a multitude of electronic devices.

The white paper compares a range of waterproofing technologies and defines the role of Aculon’s NanoProof for waterproofing electronics with an IP (ingress protection) rating of 7 and 8, a standard drawn up by the International Electrotechnical Commission that indicates immersion in one meter of liquid for an extended period of time.

“Consumers are no longer satisfied with protecting electronics with accessories which has created a demand for built-in protection from sweat to seawater,” said Edward Hughes, Chief Executive Officer, Aculon, Inc. “Current options such as gasketing are prone to failure so liquid based treatments to protect the PCB are gaining rapid traction in the market.”
