As many schools are taking measures to decrease bullying, raise awareness for mental health, and keep schools safer, Oak Grove Middle School of the Jamul-Dulzura Union School District will be integrating programs from the Sandy Hook Promise foundation to prevent violence. Sandy Hook Promise is a national non-profit organization founded by those who lost loved ones at the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. It’s missions it to provide schools and communities with programs that will protect children and prevent gun violence.
Staff and administration at Oak Grove Middle School recently met with a Sandy Hook Promise representative to plan their Sandy Hook Promise Say Something launch in November of this year. In November, staff and parents of the entire Jamul-Dulzura Union School District, as well as students from Oak Grove Middle School, will be trained by Sandy Hook Promise on their Say Something program. Say Something is a program that provides training and resources to adults and teens on how to recognize written, spoken, photographed, or video signs, especially on social media, of someone who may be a threat to themself or others and say something to a trusted adult so action can take place.
In addition to plans to participate in Say Something, Oak Grove Middle School will also be participating in the Sandy Hook Start with Hello week and are putting together a SAVE Promise Club. During the week of September 24th to 28th, hundreds of schools will participate in Start with Hello week, where they will learn how to create a culture of inclusion and to reach out to those dealing with social isolation. The SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) Club will be a place for Oak Grove students to use their leadership, creativity, and passion to stop violence before it happens.
