The Launch of the Opoponax App Gives Monique Wittig’s Work a Digital Edge

The Opoponax App celebrates the work of renowned writer, gender theorist and lesbian feminist activist, Monique Wittig & the 50th Anniversary of her first novel. This App offers an in-depth look at Monique Wittig’s groundbreaking and Prix Medicis award winning publication L’Opoponax, it also offers exclusive content, interactive features, interviews and pictures. The App was developed by Wittig’s partner and collaborator, filmmaker Sande Zeig, and is now available for free at the App Store.

In 1978 Monique Wittig shocked the audience at the Modern Language Association Convention when she declared, “Lesbians are not women.” Wittig was controversial, brilliant, and fearless – and one the first theoreticians and activists of the new feminist movement. Wittig coined the phases “heterosexual contract” and “the straight mind”.

With the Opoponax App users unlock this feminist classic with a touch of their finger, getting instant access to excerpts in eleven languages – English, French, Japanese, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, German, Italian and Spanish. The app also includes videos and print interviews with Wittig, along with exclusive photos, sketches, articles. People who are using the App can use it’s interactive interface to connect with other users to discuss Wittig’s work and explore new ideas.

The Opoponax App also gives you access to essays about Wittig’s work and its modern day applications written by new wave feminists and literary scholars, including Benoit Auclerc (l’Universite de Lyon), Annabel L. Kim (Yale and Duke Universities), Jamie Davis (Emory University) and Jean H. Duffy (University of Edinburgh). All of whom believe her ideas are as vital and relevant today as when her work was first published – and bring their own unique spin to her ideas.

This is the first App produced by Zeig and her team, who are also looking to roll out additional apps focusing on other books written by Wittig, including Les Guerilleres and The Lesbian Body and Across The Acheron.
