Addiction Centre For Men Commits To Awareness In Light Of Trends Revealing Rising Number of Suicides Among Canadian Men

When you work in a field that deals with the effects on drugs such as heroin or cocaine and other so-called party drugs, or even the very socially encouraged alcohol, you begin making connections.

Inspire Change Wellness, addiction centre focused on men’s needs, wants to express their deep commitment to raising awareness of mental health issues affecting men across Canada, particularly in light of findings revealing higher rates of suicide among Canadian men and a reluctance to seek help1.

Because it has also been shown that mental health issues and addiction are linked, and men have higher rates of addiction than women2, the centre believes it is their responsibility to do as much as they can to raise awareness, inform and offer services that can curb this negative trend.

Both genders experience unique challenges

One of the findings also suggested that while men seem less likely to attempt suicide, they are about 3 times more likely to commit suicide than women. “The facts are gruesome. When you learn that at least one in five Canadians will experience mental health problems in any given year, it is a truly shocking realization. When you also work in a field that deals with the effects on drugs such as heroin or cocaine and other so-called party drugs, or even the very socially encouraged alcohol, you begin making connections. Absolutely science has already done to work to explain and pinpoint the dangerous correlation between substance abuse and mental health. We hear our patients’ stories about not being able or feeling like they can open up or downplaying situations. This is the result of years of stigma and driven by unfair societal norms,” said an Inspire Change Wellness spokesperson.

The dangers of dual-diagnosis

When addiction and mental health issues co-occur, one influenced the other in what for many seems like an unbreakable vicious circle. In one study, it was showed that in 75% of cases of substance abuse, patients also suffered from a mental illness. Despite this, only 7% seek and access effective treatment3.

Inspire Change Wellness has embarked on a mission to encourage as many Canadian men as possible to make the right choice and seek out solutions that would not only improve their lives, but their loved ones as well. Besides raising awareness, the centre has reimagined rehab services in a manner that allows for natural healing through advice, nutrition, group and individual therapy as well as empowerment by creating individualized models of care.

Every single person at the centre has a clear understanding of the dual-diagnosis process and are available for anyone looking to make a healthy choice, by filling out a quick form or contacting them at 888.277.2145, they can provide the support needed.
