These days, the book ‘The Heights of Courage’ is published in Chinese by ContentoNow publishing, a project orchestrated by Netanel Semrik. The book was written after the Yom Kippur War, an Israeli war in 1973 when Kahalani was a Commander of a tank battalion. In the book, he describes his experiences within the framework of the 7th Brigade which was responsible for stopping the Syrians and occupying the Golan Heights.
He shares his feelings, doubts, and fears as a commander and a fighter in a tank with dozens of Syrian enemy tanks surrounding.
This is a fascinating human document that proves that even in the organization and orchestration of an army, the determination and perseverance of a single person in a battle that seems lost, can transform a war from defeat to victory. The book was published in various languages.
“I feel that this book describing my perspective of the Yom Kippur War is an important story to be heard. The story itself is still relevant as Israel continues to be threatened by its surrounding countries, in addition, the conflict in the middle east still continues and becomes more and more complex, involving more and more different countries around the globe.” – Avigdor Kahalani
Following are a few words by Shimon Peres, key Israeli politician and former president of Israel who wrote his impressions after reading the book:
“The war appears in your book in its human light, the light of heroism, and not only in its satanic demands, which are full of hatred. War is cruel to its victims but superior to its fighters. This is a masterpiece for a nation involved in wars for decades. This is a rare story of a man who is rightly called ‘the hero of Israel’. This is a true legend for the young generation, a ray of light for the entire people. I believe that you have achieved in this book what you wanted to achieve: every reader will love his people more, and he would know better why. Only war-giver achievements can surpass its description. And so they are – extraordinary.” – Shimon Peres, 24.8.75
