New Short Film, “You Are Free”, Sheds Light on Industry Unknown to Many

Classic Underdog Movie that Brings Attention and Awareness to Queer Culture

Toronto, Canada – March 4, 2015 – James Fanizza, writer and director who received  the inaugural Short to Feature award from Inside Out and the Harold Greenberg Fund, has announced he will be making a new short film, You Are Free. The film is a classic underdog movie with a unique twist that sheds light on queer culture. Fanizza turns to crowdfunding on Kickstarter to help complete filming and bring the industry something new and fresh everyone will enjoy. The goal is to raise $5,000 CAD by March 15th, 2015.

You Are Free is about an amateur drag queen, Cameron, who gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete in a national pageant. The film shows the aspiring drag queen on his journey as he tries to save his failing bar, overcome adversity, and fight for his self-respect. It is an original screenplay that will bring a clear focus on a matter that is appealing to the mainstream audience while putting queer culture in the spotlight.

Although strides have been made at seeing queer characters in the mainstream media, film and television are still falling short of providing queer-focused stories for a mainstream audience. James Fanizza wants to change this by creating a film that mainstream audiences world-wide can enjoy and one that the queer community can be proud of. His commitment to the queer culture as an artist and experience in previous short films has helped him develop a script that is compelling, moving, and relatable to all audiences. He has teamed with other prominent professionals such as Farah Merani, a producer and owner of Lifeguard Productions, Leah Doz, actor in the upcoming APTN series Delmer and Marta, and Kristina Esposito, a producer of many great short films, showing at this year’s Reel World Film Festival.

Now they need funds to assist them in completing this project. Money received from supporters will go towards professional make-up and costume, hiring a professional cast and crew, and other quality equipment to create a short film that will compete in mainstream market.

Those who want to see this incredible film on the big screen, please make a contribution by visiting the Kickstarter campaign or click here. Backers can choose from a variety of attractive rewards as a thank you for their support.

For those who cannot make a monetary contribution, but wish to help, please share this campaign on Facebook and Twitter. This is an “all-or-nothing” deal. If they do not receive enough funding, then it can be years before this film can be made! Do not wait. Show support by making a contribution or sharing this with others.
