ATLANTA, Georgia – Several industrial sterilization factories located throughout portions of Atlanta’s suburbs, have come under heavy scrutiny from both citizens in nearby communities and environmental protection groups and agencies for their emission of ethylene oxide (ETO), a popular sterilization chemical, into the air. According to an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report conducted in 2018, there were elevated cancer risks in three census tracts throughout the metro Atlanta area, including in the cities of Smyrna and Covington, the two locations where ethylene oxide sterilization factories are located.
