Camp Lejeune Holds Annual Base Skeet Shooting Championships

The winner of the event won a designated parking spot for the year as well as bragging rights

Last Saturday saw the annual Base Skeet Shooting Championships in the McIntyre-Parks Recreational Shooting Complex at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The base echoed with gunfire as hopefuls lined up on the range from eight different shooting positions. The skeet trap spun its throwing arm and flung clay pigeons through the high and low house windows as shooters attempted to hit the barrage of clay in a single shot.

Military dependent, Kevin Hostinsky, won the 100-target event hitting 99 clay pigeons for the championship title. “This earned him bragging rights and a parking spot next year,” said Jim Hill, McIntyre-Parks Recreational Shooting Complex manager. Finishing runner-up was Sgt. William Southwell, of the All-Marine skeet shooting team, with 97 out of the 100 hits.

During his first tournament showing, earlier this year, Southwell proved he belonged on the All-Marine team by hitting 486 out of 500 clay pigeons at the 53rd annual Armed Services Skeet Championship. He was competing against two other Marines for the one spot available on the team and put in hours of practice. “I probably fire around 700 rounds per week,” said Southwell.

Other than the near perfect performances put in by Hostinsky and Southwell, Frank Kiel also shot an 88 to win the group two competition and for the group 3 competition, Greg Dropa shot an 80. On November 23rd, a vintage skeet shooting competition will next be held; requiring competitors to shoot with a pump shotgun or side-by-side at a 50-target event. A five-stand, 25-target event is also scheduled after that for December 7th.
