But first, to understand Gumball3000, try and picture Cannonball Run in the contemporary age of social networking, where a group of uber-wealthy drivers (aka pilots) – race the world’s most expensive cars across multiple continents (beginning from Miami’s Ocean Drive to Ibiza’s Carrer Andenes).
At each checkpoint, raging fans crowd the streets in a carnival like atmosphere to check out the vast array of custom Lamborghinis, Ferraris, & Porsches – where they get to meet/greet celeb drivers, pick up prizes and autographed promo gear.
In a recent RollingStone Magazine interview, rapper Bun B described the race as anything but competitive. “The Gumball is not a bunch of rich people just showing off cars,” says Bun, a veteran habitué of the rally. “I understand why people would think that because the people that do it are wealthy. But once we get on that highway, money can’t help you in certain situations. You’re gonna laugh, you’re gonna cry, you’re gonna be happy and angry. And it takes your brothers to help you get through it all. The Gumball is a brotherhood.”
The brotherhood began 15 years ago, when former skater Maximillion Cooper invited 50 of his buddies to take part in a drive across Europe. Winning wasn’t nearly as important as the parties that followed each leg of the race, and not surprisingly, within just a few years, word of the rally spread worldwide.
Ferrari race car pilot Josh Cartu, member of Team Wolfpack explains “If a driver has car trouble along the way, another Gumballer stops to help out. One team member had a flat tire on a holiday weekend in a country that doesn’t speak native English, but within 5 minutes we had him back on the road”.
This year’s Gumball event was more than just car rally’s and wild parties. Professional skater Tony Hawk raised over $600k towards a charity “skate park”, of which Cartu donated $60k, and just like every good [car] movie romance, the finale was not marked by crossing the finish line, rather by Gumball’s founder Maximillion Cooper wedding his soul mate U.S. rapper Eve in a lavish party held in Ibiza.
