Millions Of Canadians Are Using Distance Learning For Their Education

There is an accelerated trend towards remote education or distance learning especially as is related to health topics.

Toronto – With the demands for healthy living increasing, Internet searches on health-related topics and the number of people searching for distance learning programs are skyrocketing.

In fact, according to data from Statistics Canada, in 2005, over one quarter of adult Canadians, an estimated 6.4 million people used the Internet for education, training or school work.

“An estimated 8.7 million adult Canadians used the Internet to search for medical or health-related information,” adds Cathy Underhill and Larry McKeown, “Getting a Second Opinion: Health Information & The Internet”.

“90% of community colleges offer a dedicated website for their distance education program and students”, says the Instructional Technology Council.

These statistics confirm an accelerated trend towards remote education or distance learning especially as is related to health topics. Whether it is finding an answer for personal use or for completing a diploma program, educational institutions are increasingly developing online delivery for their diplomas and degrees.

The Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine is an example of the many institutions that offer distance learning in their 3 year diploma program as well as their post-graduate program.

“I think it’s a great complement to the in-class program to accommodate those who are out of town and for those who want flexibility”, says Joyce Edge, Director, Admissions, Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine (CCHM).

Edge adds, “The acceleration of distance learning programs goes hand in hand with the increasing demand for homeopaths and homeopathic treatment.”

In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that Homeopathy is the second most used medical system internationally.  This is supported by the fact that more than 500 physicians and 5000 non-physicians in the United States currently use Homeopathy in clinical practice, and 2.5 million Americans currently use Homeopathic medicines.

Edge claims, “We have seen a noticeable increase in practitioner enquiries, especially in the last two years and as a result the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine has expanded its in-class and remote training.”
