New “Space Battleship Yamato 2199” in 2014

A new Yamato voyage will be launched next year in a theater near you

According to a teaser on YouTube, a new addition to the “Space Battleship Yamato 2199” episodes will be coming to theaters in 2014. The teaser can be viewed on the on the anime’s official YouTube account. Details such as the story theme, staff members and release date of the new episode were not given.

The teaser does introduce the anime as a feature length edition of “Space Battleship Yamato 2199,” so it will probably be similar to the TV series that ran from April to September 2013. After the final episode of the animated TV series on September 26th, the teaser was aired on the television network on September 29th.

The television series known outside of Japan as “Star Blazers 2199,” was a remake of the popular 1974 TV series called “Star Blazers” or “Space Battleship Yamato” and the plot was very much the same. Following radioactive contamination of the Earth in the year 2199, by an alien force called the Gamilons, the human race sits on the brink of extinction.

Survivors of the alien attack are attempting to obtain the Cosmo Cleaner D device from the planet Iscandar, which lays more than 168,000 light years from Earth. The Cosmo Cleaner D device is the only hope the survivors have of riding the Earth of the radioactive contamination. In the final episode of the TV series, Yamato’s crew returns home.

Split into seven chapters for the April 2012 theatrical release, the “2199” TV series established a new business model that shows TV episodes in theaters, as a movie, before their TV premieres. The latest “Space Battleship Yamato 2199” episodes will be the first movie from the franchise since “Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection” was released in 2009.
