Boca Raton, FL (February 13, 2014) — Refractive eye surgery is any eye surgery used to improve the refractive state of the eye and decrease or eliminate dependency on glasses or contact lenses. This can include various methods of surgical remodeling of the cornea or cataract surgery. The most common methods today use excimer lasers to reshape the curvature of the cornea. Successful refractive eye surgery can reduce or cure common vision disorders such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. However, these advanced treatments are presenting another challenge once patients need Cataract surgery.
Prior to refractive surgery traditional IOL (Intra Ocular Lens) calculations used assumed values of the refractive power of the cornea. In a patient who has undergone refractive surgery these assumed refractive powers are no longer valid, because the cornea has been reshaped.
This posseses an obstacle in calculating the IOL power in these post refractive surgery patients. With the advent of Premium IOLs patient expectations of better vision are higher which leads to more pressure on the physician to calculate the best possible IOL power. Fortunately new technology, such as the OCULUS Pentacam can measure the cornea from front to back and provide the missing data for more accurate IOL calculations. The accurate data from the Pentacam can also help screening for corneal abnormalities thus lowering the risk prior to any refractive surgery.
