There is a dangerous new fad going on among young drivers in Ireland called taking ‘selfies’ that may open a driver up to lawsuits or worse. The fad involves drivers photographing of themselves with their mobile phone and then posting them on Instagram, a popular picture-sharing site on the Web.
To get an idea of the increased risk drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists face from these short sighted individuals: there are presently over 3,500 Instagram tagged with”#drivingselfie,” more than 9,000 tagged “#drivingtowork,” almost 50,000 with “#drivinghome” and an astounding three million plus posts on “#driving.”
Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer with Mayo County Council, said the new fad was a deeply worrying development. “It is a life-endangering practice and it’s especially risky for young, inexperienced drivers, who are already extremely vulnerable to crashes, to be distracted when they are behind the wheel,” he said. “Answering a call or reading a text, or attempting to take a picture of yourself while driving, is never worth the loss of a life.”
As a result of the fad, which is also prevalent in the United States, Toyota has recently launched an advertising campaign there to combat the dangerous pastime. Toyota’s catch phrase is “Don’t Shoot and Drive” and targeted specifically at people that take photos of themselves while driving.
The ad uses several popular Instagram filters to view car accidents. Outrageous photographs are shown throughout the commercial including one young motorist that posted a picture of himself wearing a horse’s head.
The Road Safety Authority says their research shows that driver distractions of this type are the cause of 20 to 30 percent of all road collisions. Surveys show that 40 percent of Irish drivers admit to using their mobile phone while driving.
Anyone caught in the act of using his or her mobile phone while driving is breaking Irish law and subject to a fine of up to €2,000. If you cause an accident while using a cell, you are liable to lawsuits that dwarf that amount.
