Research Finds Perfect Time for Coffee

Caffeine most effective an hour after waking

For many, coffee has been a miracle bean for many years. Whether one chokes it down to simply survive the day, or cannot live without at least four cups of roasted and sugared brown liquid, coffee has made its mark. And while the bean may help pull all-nighters or help keep professional fresh at work, a new study has unearned the exact time in which coffee is best suited for the human mind.

According to a study from neuroscientist Steven Miller, from the university of Health and Sciences in Maryland, the effect of the caffeine in coffee is most effective between 9:30 am and 11:30 am.

Miller stated that the it was the best time to drink the coffee because of the levels of hormone in the body known as cortisol. Such hormones are low at that time, and because cortisol is involved in keeping the body alert, using caffeine to jump-start the body at that time is key.

When those who drink coffee at 8 am and 9 am, there cortisol levels tend to be high, according to the study. They then become tolerant toward the caffeine and the effects are not useful. The same can be said for those who attempt to drink coffee at 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

The body simply does not need a jolt to stay away at those times, and thus the caffeine injected is simply putting sugar on top of sugar, as it were. Miller noted that during these peak hours people get the least benefit out of caffeine. An hour after waking up tends to be the best time to utilize the caffeine, according to Miller.

“If we are drinking caffeine at a time when your cortisol concentration in the blood is at its peak, you probably should not be drinking it. This is because cortisol production is strongly related to your level of alertness and cortisol peaks for your 24 hour rhythm between 8 and 9am on average,” Miller said in his blog.
