Researchers Find No Strong Evidence Skipping Breakfast is Causes Weight Gain

Only one intensive study with mixed results, says expert

Americans over the years have been told time and again that eating breakfast is a great way to prevent weight gain. Skipping breakfast, as the thought goes, increases your hunger throughout the day and seek out compensating snacking meals. It was also always said that it is easier to burn off breakfast calories.

However, new research is showing that the conventional weight-loss wisdom may be flawed, and the idea of eating breakfast helps with weight loss seems to be a misunderstood concept.

There is a mere small portion of studies that actually look at the claim, according to the study held by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Furthermore the study concluded that missing breakfast has a very small, and sometimes no, negative effect on weight.

The studies that show that outcome have been overlooked by what amounts to a dozen of observational studies that associate breakfast with habits of eating and obesity, but failed to show any causal relation, according to Dr. David B. Allison. The doctor is the director of the Nutrition Obesity Research Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Allison scoured both medical journals and literature to find only one long-term study, which was both carefully controlled and randomly assigned regarding people who were measured in their effects of skipping breakfast.

The study was carried out by Vanderbilt University over three months and elicited mixed results. Both those who added and those who removed breakfast lost weight in the study. The weight loss was likely more attributable to lifestyle changes.

Dr. Allison stated that the findings “showed no effect over all of eating versus skipping breakfast, that people do equally well on either one.”

“You would think at this point that you would either abandon the idea or do some more randomized controlled trials,” he added. “But instead the association studies started.”
